Filmmaking Workshops at the 2020 UFFyc


Create with the Underexposed Film Festival yc! On Saturday, March 28, the UFFyc is presents two workshops that allow participants to explore filmmaking through puppetry and books. First, Yamasong: Working with Paperclay, a puppetry workshop, will be held at the Gettys Art Center Courtroom in Rock Hill SC. Then, teens are invited to create book trailers at the York County Public Library, Main Branch in Old Town Rock Hill.

Filmmaker and artist Sam Koji Hale introduces workshop participants to Paperclay, his choice in puppet-making material. Using puppets from his award-winning film Yamasong and others, Sam will teach participants how to sculpt puppet heads for characters approx 18-20" tall. He will also show how to combine Paperclay with other materials, like papier-mache. Sam will also present behind-the-scenes footage and a slideshow on how he created Yamasong.

SAM KOJI HALE

Sam Koji Hale is an award-winning filmmaker, designer and puppetry artist. Sam’s feature directorial debut is Yamasong: March of the Hollows, produced by Dark Dunes Productions and based on the short film Yamasong, created for Heather Henson’s film series Handmade Puppet Dreams.

Sam’s short film Yamasong played over 30 film festivals, embraced worldwide by sci-fi/fantasy genre festivals like Fantastic Planet, Fantastic Fest and Dragon-Con Independent Film Festival, where it received Best Animated Fantasy and Best Animated Film in 2010. Sam also received a 2014 UNIMA Citation of Excellence in Puppetry for Yamasong, the highest award given in the field of puppetry arts.

With nearly two decades of animation and film experience, Sam continues to produce puppet short films for Heather Henson’s Handmade Puppet Dreams series, screening in film festivals worldwide, including Slamdance, Newport Beach, Sitges, Annecy Animation Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Florida Film Festival, Seattle Film Festival, Dragon Con and Comic Con.

Sam's other credits include art director for the Cartoon Network show Annoying Orange, Disney Jr's Bite-Sized Adventures of Sam Sandwich (lead VFX artist) and Disney XD’s Team Smithereen (associate producer). He also produced Bunny Love, screening at the 2020 Underexposed Film Festival yc.

In a World... where teens make book trailers! Do you love books and want others to love them too? Do you love movie previews? Join these two together and you have book trailers! We will learn how to make and create different types of book trailers. Ages 11-17. Register online or call (803) 504-3763, starting March 17. Tickets to this workshop are free. Participants must register in advance. This workshop is produced and hosted by the York County Public Library.

The 2020 Underexposed Film Festival yc will take place from March 25 – 28, 2020 on the campus of Winthrop University and in Old Town Rock Hill.
