SYNOPSIS

In Chinatown slum, Thao and their friends unite after their grandmother's murder and robbery. Disillusioned by authorities, they seek street justice against a thieving gang, aiming to protect their community's elderly and fight petty crime, finding renewed purpose and solidarity.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR 

 

Sally Tran (she/her/they) is a NYC-based writer and director by way of Vietnam and New Zealand. Known for her unique storytelling that highlights multiple cultural experiences and social issues, Sally focuses on stories about marginalized communities.

 

She has participated in prestigious programs such as the Massey University Writers Residency and Berlinale Talents. Her work has been supported by the New Zealand Film Commission, Script to Screen New Zealand, Creative New Zealand, and Asia New Zealand. Her short film Don't (2024) received funding from NYCWF, NYFA, MOME, the Panavision New Filmmakers Grant, and the Vimeo BIPOC Fund.

 

Currently, she is in production on a short documentary, Still a Go Between, supported by the BRIC Film Labs Residency and the Tribeca films Kickstart Initiative. She has just finished directing Clementine, 2024, which explores transgender identity and is currently being submitted to festivals. Sally collaborated closely with LGBTQ+ filmmakers, focusing on inclusive storytelling for this project. Ngoai is a hybrid documentary-narrative short that is currently in post production.

 

She is dedicated to crafting narratives that resonate deeply, share underrepresented stories, and foster empathy globally.​
